Once your student joins the Zoom meeting for their Online Essay session, they’ll be placed in a waiting room. The proctor will begin letting students in right at the scheduled start time for the session.
When your student is let into the session, they’ll only be able to see the proctor and themselves. No other student will see them and they won’t see the other students.
They’ll need to make sure that their camera is turned on and that they share their screen. This allows the proctor to monitor their progress throughout the session.
How To Share Your Screen
At the bottom of the Zoom window should be a menu. To share the screen, click the green “Share” button on the Zoom menu.
Then, select the option to share the full desktop screen by clicking the blue “Share” button.
Troubleshooting
Should you encounter any error messages while trying to share your screen, follow the steps below to troubleshoot:
If your student is using a school computer we’d highly recommend changing devices. Schools often place permission limits on these computers that will prevent the student from sharing their screen which can only be unlocked by a school network administrator.
- Check your browser.
- Make sure you have updated your browser to the latest version. Some browsers work better with Zoom (i.e. Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox... etc.) than others. Safari is the least compatible with Zoom.
- Check your permissions settings
- Disable any parental control settings/apps
- Switch devices if using a school computer
- For MacOS users:
- Click the Apple icon in the top left corner of the screen, and then click System Settings. Next, click Privacy and Security and make sure the Zoom is toggled on.
- If this doesn’t work follow these steps: https://support.zoom.com/hc/en/article?id=zm_kb&sysparm_article=KB0064868
Additional MacOS Troubleshooting
- Review your app version and then update as necessary.
- Clear cache and cookies from the settings (if using the web client)
- Restart your device or browser.
- Uninstall the app, then download and reinstall it.
- For macOS version 10.15 Catalina and higher, check your device’s privacy settings and make sure that Zoom has permission for screen recording.
